6 Layered, Orange Ombre

My sweet sister just graduated last week, the 23rd of May, 2013!
I couldn't pass up the opportunity to make another cool cake, and she wasn't complaining when I told her it would be ORANGE!
Her favorite color is orange, so when I found this super cool cake off of howdoesshe.com

I had to try and do the 6 layers!

It was fun trying to figure out how to make orange cake mix... I was having a blonde moment and couldn't figure out how in the world I was going to get different shades of orange. Before I was about to go to the store and look for orange food coloring, I had to remind myself that yellow + red = orange.

We got there! 6 different shades of orange. Or 6 almost different shades of orange.

I followed the tips on howdoesshe.com and used the 3 different frostings she recommended. It wasn't pretty, but when it was stiff and frozen enough to frost, I was glad I followed the "crumby frosting" suggestion. It made the cake easier to frost the last layer so that I didn't get orange cake pieces all over the pretty white frosting.
I popped it in the freezer while we went to Kallie's graduation ceremony, and when we got home, it was perfectly ready to frost! I used a marshmallow fluff frosting, and it was actually pretty good.

Our happy graduate!
Yay for the Class of 2013!

The graduate and I! :) I'm so proud of her!

Sesame Street Party!

So my friend, Kara, and I have been planning her little boy's 1st birthday party since he was born! We have been addicted to Pinterest, and learning all there could possibly be to learn about making birthday cakes and cupcakes. We came to the fantastic conclusion of ..... Sesame Street! What little kid doesn't love Sesame Street? Well, Braxton loves Sesame Street. And he got one heck of a Sesame Street cake!

We had originally planned a three tiered cake with Big Bird, Cookie Monster, and Elmo as our main characters. But the closer it got to May 10, we decided to just stick with a single Elmo cake for her little one to dig his cute little fingers in. His 1st birthday is definitely going to be one he will be able to remember later on from scrap books and what not.

Google images and Pinterest were always running on our phones while we worked together over at IFA Country Stores, here in St. George, Utah. We finally decided, about 4 days before the big day, that we were going to try copying this little jewel Kara found off of Pinterest, from CakeCentral

Cute, Isn't it? Well we sure thought so. We started out by dying the cake batter with purple, yellow, green, and blue to make the inside look cool when Braxton's little hands got into it.

We've tried a few zebra cakes before, so that part was easy. To go along with this adorable Elmo cake, we decided that we were going to make cupcakes for everyone else at the party. We chose 5 different Sesame Street characters, and we used these as our original idea we found from Google images from Once Upon A Cupcake

While our cakes were baking, we prepped the cupcakes and made them colorful as well.
The next morning we cut the centers out of the cupcakes......
And filled them with a vanilla pudding and whip cream mixture. They were super delicious!

After a few hours, and with the help of Kara's two sisters, Malloree and Taylor, we got our cupcakes done, and Kara got her Elmo cake made! The finished products were so adorable!
Elmo

Abby

Oscar the Grouch

Big Bird
Cookie Monster

Everyone that showed up at the party just loved these cupcakes! Who couldn't love them? They're so adorable. And for those of you who are wondering what happened to the Elmo cake... Well, let's just say that Braxton enjoyed it!

Thanks for reading! I hope you stay tuned for my next baking adventures! Feel free to follow me :)
