6 Layered, Orange Ombre

My sweet sister just graduated last week, the 23rd of May, 2013!
I couldn't pass up the opportunity to make another cool cake, and she wasn't complaining when I told her it would be ORANGE!
Her favorite color is orange, so when I found this super cool cake off of howdoesshe.com

I had to try and do the 6 layers!

It was fun trying to figure out how to make orange cake mix... I was having a blonde moment and couldn't figure out how in the world I was going to get different shades of orange. Before I was about to go to the store and look for orange food coloring, I had to remind myself that yellow + red = orange.

We got there! 6 different shades of orange. Or 6 almost different shades of orange.

I followed the tips on howdoesshe.com and used the 3 different frostings she recommended. It wasn't pretty, but when it was stiff and frozen enough to frost, I was glad I followed the "crumby frosting" suggestion. It made the cake easier to frost the last layer so that I didn't get orange cake pieces all over the pretty white frosting.
I popped it in the freezer while we went to Kallie's graduation ceremony, and when we got home, it was perfectly ready to frost! I used a marshmallow fluff frosting, and it was actually pretty good.

Our happy graduate!
Yay for the Class of 2013!

The graduate and I! :) I'm so proud of her!

Dragon Cake

My little brother just turned 11 last week, and he begged me to make a cake for him. His favorite color is purple, so we had to work around that. There was no Captain American or Superman cake that could change his mind from the color purple! So we had to do a little thinking, and he eventually decided on a Dragon cake that he seen in the same book as my Owl cake.

So, I took on the challenge!

I filled up a 10 inch fluted tube, bundt cake pan, and went to town.
For some reason, that I cannot fathom, I have trouble with bundt pans. They don't like to cooperate whenever I work with them.

Lucky for me though, You couldn't tell that the top half of my cake was destroyed.
I used almost a whole bottle of violet food coloring, adding some royal blue in hopes of making it a little brighter, but my little Koby ended up with a grey-violet dragon.
I used sliced fruit chews for the spikes on the dragon's back, and rolled up a fruit roll around a cookie stick to use as the wings. I even tried to be creative and cut the fruit roll up to make the fire coming out of the dragon's mouth. I found super sized marshmallows at WalMart for the legs of the dragon, and then used cut up marshmallows for the teeth, claws, and eyes.
We had a happy little birthday boy! And his friends eagerly devoured everything on the cake board!
If you've got advice on how to use bundt cakes, feel free to comment!

Owls, Owls, Owls!

Whooo could resist an OWL cake? I think they are so adorable! So anyways, I normally will just glance at the magazines at the check out stands in line at WalMart, but there was a magazine by Better Homes and Gardens with a big owl on the front cover. Upon taking a closer look, I seen it was a cake! A Mama owl, and a baby owl next to it as a cupcake! I showed my mama, and she enthused about it with me for a minute before we decided we were going to buy it and try it out. Thus starting my baking adventures this summer!

For no particular reason, I chose to make my owl cake and cupcakes last week while I had a day off from work. I got a 9X13 pan out and baked a white cake for my Mama owl. After it baked and cooled for a little bit, I put it in the freezer for about 15 minutes so it could harden enough for me to cut it. While that was freezing, I baked 24 cupcakes for my Baby owls.

I should have taken a picture of my mistake, but I wasn't thinking properly when I was cutting the top of my Mama owl. The directions told me to cut out a crescent shape from the top, creating the peaks for the owl's ears. It then said to cut the crescent shape in half... horizontally. I stood there for about 5 minutes, trying to figure out what that meant. It was only AFTER I cut my crescent right down the middle, that I realized I needed to cut it in half, horizontally, from the side of the crescent. So before I freaked out and did something stupid, I just told myself to find some marshmallows and powder sugar, and make up some fondant to use for my Mama owl's wings. It was quick and easy since I had watched Kara make some fondant for Elmo's eyes and nose just the weekend before.

After all the assembling was done, I used a can of chocolate frosting to decorate my Mama owl's face and wings, and used a butter frosting with yellow coloring for the belly. I used powder sugar doughnuts with a Whopper candy in the middle for the eyes; pink Starburst for the bows, and orange Starbursts for the nose and feet. For the feathered look, I used sliced almonds. That was time consuming... placing each almond in line with the others!

And walahh! My finished Mama owl! I'm proud of it!

My baby owls were frosted the same way as the Mama owl, but I used up the rest of my fondant for the eyes, and then I used brown Reese's Pieces for the eyes. I tediously placed the sliced almonds on their bellies, and used the orange Starbursts for the nose and FEET. The men I work with kept calling them teeth, so I had to reassure that they were feet.

They just bring a huge smile to my face every time I look at these pictures!
With one more addition to this post, I almost forgot to add some other owl cupcakes I helped my Mom make for a bake sale Costco had on Monday. She baked the cupcakes while I was in New Castle, getting my hair done with Kara, but she saved the decorating for me when I got home!

With the help of Pinterest, I found these adorable little owls on Hostess with the Mostess
How simple are these!?! And so cute! So I changed my icing to a teal color, and I cursed all the Oreo cookies that were broken in the package as I tried to scavenge ones with cream on them. My Mom had to come in and save me, fixing what cookies she could as she scraped the cream up and glued cookies together before we placed them on the cupcakes. We used M&Ms and Reese's Pieces for the eye centers and the noses!

They're just so adorable, and they make me smile big every time I look at these pictures! I hope you all liked my little owls! Come back and check out my next adventure.. A dragon cake for a little boy turning 11!

Sesame Street Party!

So my friend, Kara, and I have been planning her little boy's 1st birthday party since he was born! We have been addicted to Pinterest, and learning all there could possibly be to learn about making birthday cakes and cupcakes. We came to the fantastic conclusion of ..... Sesame Street! What little kid doesn't love Sesame Street? Well, Braxton loves Sesame Street. And he got one heck of a Sesame Street cake!

We had originally planned a three tiered cake with Big Bird, Cookie Monster, and Elmo as our main characters. But the closer it got to May 10, we decided to just stick with a single Elmo cake for her little one to dig his cute little fingers in. His 1st birthday is definitely going to be one he will be able to remember later on from scrap books and what not.

Google images and Pinterest were always running on our phones while we worked together over at IFA Country Stores, here in St. George, Utah. We finally decided, about 4 days before the big day, that we were going to try copying this little jewel Kara found off of Pinterest, from CakeCentral

Cute, Isn't it? Well we sure thought so. We started out by dying the cake batter with purple, yellow, green, and blue to make the inside look cool when Braxton's little hands got into it.

We've tried a few zebra cakes before, so that part was easy. To go along with this adorable Elmo cake, we decided that we were going to make cupcakes for everyone else at the party. We chose 5 different Sesame Street characters, and we used these as our original idea we found from Google images from Once Upon A Cupcake

While our cakes were baking, we prepped the cupcakes and made them colorful as well.
The next morning we cut the centers out of the cupcakes......
And filled them with a vanilla pudding and whip cream mixture. They were super delicious!

After a few hours, and with the help of Kara's two sisters, Malloree and Taylor, we got our cupcakes done, and Kara got her Elmo cake made! The finished products were so adorable!
Elmo

Abby

Oscar the Grouch

Big Bird
Cookie Monster

Everyone that showed up at the party just loved these cupcakes! Who couldn't love them? They're so adorable. And for those of you who are wondering what happened to the Elmo cake... Well, let's just say that Braxton enjoyed it!

Thanks for reading! I hope you stay tuned for my next baking adventures! Feel free to follow me :)
